The cat’s eye retroreflector for Boreal Laser was designed in an attempt to allow for flexible light return through adjustment of the mirror-to-lens separation distance, while retaining the retroreflector principle of insensitivity to alignment. It succeeded on both fronts, but ultimately wasn’t used because of the high cost of trying to scale the solution for larger arrays at longer distances.
